There are at least six words I’d never in my life have expected to hear from the lips of a beautiful, young, blond girl in designer clothing: “Do you have any black metal?” – never the less, those are exactly the question that Tina posed the other day when she was visiting to pick up the key for her old apartment and borrow some music.

Just to be clear, I love the fact that she’s interested in broadening her musical horizons and I wholeheartedly enjoyed throwing everything from Neil Young and Simon and Garfunkel over classic rock to extreme metal at her.. But let’s be honest, there’s still a hint of stereotyping at work here.

Just as people look at me and an (ex) long-haired, red neck, rock ‘n’ roll son of a gun in blue jeans and band shirts, and expect me to act and think in a certain way, I expect the rest of the world to act in a certain way. When I first went through the doors of the University of Southern Denmark’s campus Kolding, I didn’t expect to find too many people amongst the fancy in-crowd who’d be too into metal.. And I certainly didn’t expect one of the few I found to be the likes of Tina.. o_O

To be honest, my thoughts when I first saw Tina were – as when I first saw most of my beautiful and lovely female friends – along the lines of “Oh, she’s pretty, but I doubt I’ll ever even talk to her.” Now, if you’d told me back then that six years later I’d be standing on a balcony with this particular girl, doing jäger shots to the sound of some of Europe’s up and coming death metal bands while waiting to go bang our heads off to some hardcore thrash metal.. Well, I’d have called crazy talk on you and told you to go get your head examined.

Yet, apparently, the God of Thunder (and Rock n Roll) works in mysterious ways.. Tina and I became friends, we started spending more time together and, well, call me a bad influence but somehow Tina went from listening to pop/shock rock and hard rock from the likes of the Bloodhound Gang, Metallica and Nirvana to increasingly more obscure, complicated and extreme shades of the metal and rock spectrum.. She takes pride in denying my influence in her taste of music, but I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t be listening to the likes of Slipknot and Five Finger Death Punch if it weren’t for me.

Fast forward a few years from the day we first met, and my tiny sidekick and I are running around all over Europe, catching shows with many of the biggest names in the business on the biggest stages there are, as well as some of the up and coming stars in dimly lit little venues.. And what, pray tell, Johan, is wrong with this picture?! I’ll tell you.. Nothing, of course! It’s just that.. Well, of all the people in the world I thought I might be doing this with, my first thought.. Or any though for that matter.. Would not have fallen on a 5 foot tall, blue-eyed, well-groomed blonde with an outspoken love for the color pink and things that sparkle.. It’s just not very metal! She’s just not the kinda person you’d expect to bump into in a mosh pit.. Yet, around me, she’s exactly the kinda person you might run into in a mosh pit and it makes for a hell of a lot of interesting reactions.

Of course, me being a guy, you’d think that having a beautiful and smart girl who just happens to be into beers and metal for a best friend is a pretty sweet deal.. And you are right, of course, but there are complications as well.. Now, just as I’ll stand by having publicly admitted that Tina is a very pretty young lady, and even, in a momentary spell of insanity, having admitted that pink looks good on her, I’ll also have to stand by having given her A LOT of shit and talked a lot of trash about the outfits she’s pondered on or decided on wearing to various shows.. Because, well, how on earth could someone possibly come up with the idea of wearing pink to a death metal show?! I mean, what’s wrong with her?? Metal equals black, that’s what the stereotype dictates! So just as I’ve struggled to understand and accept the fact that the girl really is into my lifestyle, I’ve probably struggled harder to accept the way in which she is into it: pink Yankees cap, sparkles and all! It somehow seems wrong and un-stereotypical!

And you know what, I think I get it now, I think that’s exactly the point! Metal, and the rest of the world for that matter, has become so damn stereotypical that you’re expected to act or dress in a certain way to fit into a certain subculture, or you’re placed within a certain culture based on the way you act or dress.. And what she essentially doing is taking a page from the book of Necrobutcher of Mayhem fame and going FUCK THAT, FUCK THEM and FUCK YOU (in a decidedly more charming manner): I’ll dress the way I want and I’ll listen to the things I want and I’ll have a damn good time confusing members of the general public and the metal sub-genre in the process. Yea, I know, took me a few years to figure that out. I’m a bit slow at times, but now that I do get it, I play along best as I can and have a great ol’ laugh on behalf of those who still don’t get it.

Now, I know that there are a lot of people who would argue that girls don’t belong in metal that neither does pink and that metals is a brothers in arms kinda thing.. To that I’ll simply say: If you don’t think girls belong in metal, look at Angela Gossow from Arch Enemy wiping the floor with most male vocalists in her genre. If Ivan Moody from 5FDP takes one look at your pink shirt and gives you the double horns up, then pink most certainly belongs in metal.. And well, you can have your sweaty brothers in arms and I’ll happily have another shot of jäger with my sister in arms.. And if you’re still not buying it, you’re probably just jealous because it’s me, and not you, that she’s getting shots for at the bar while I save our spot in the front row.. I may never have thought that Tina would be the person I’d be dragging to every other show around the country – or the continent for that matter – but I am happy to do so regardless of what people think and how they react..

But that’s still not to say that I wasn’t thrown back and perplexed by the sheer absurdity of this little blonde asking me about fuckin’ black metal.. I guess I can still be surprised.. Good show.. And Tina, you may be all tiny and blonde and pretty in pink, but you’re still a hundred times more rock n roll than a lot of people I know.. This one’s for you \m/

.. Now let’s go watch those Rammstein guys, eh?

Everybody probably knows that on December 8, 1980, the world lost a great music when John Lennon was gunned down. What fewer people probably know is that on the same date 24 years later, in 2004, the metal world lost an equally important icon..

On this day, ex-Pantera and Damageplan guitarist, “Dimebag” Darrel Abbott was shot, and killed, during a show in Columbus, Ohio by a deranged, so-called fan. Dimebag was the kinda person whose music, spirit and very being touched and moved a lot of people. Something as rare as a genuinely good person in an, at times, pretty dirty business.. And as such his death created a pretty unparalleled stir of emotion within the metal community.

A couple of days ago, I found this video of Zakk Wylde, Ozzy Osbourne guitarist and Black Label Society front man, paying tribute to his late, great friend by performing a live piano version of his song “In This River” .. And, well, if you thought the original version was heartbreaking, this is probably gonna beat you over the head pretty badly. It really goes to show that while metal stars may look all tough and emotionally detached, deep down, they’re people with feelings just like everybody else.

I realize that the concept of sobbing rock stars might seem tragically comic to some, to me it just goes to show that we metalheads aren’t as emotionally detached as people would like to think.

Today brought the long awaited first band package for next years Rock Am Ring festival and it was, in many ways, a bit like Christmas.. (Or in my case probably better than Christmas, but that’s another story) Both as regards the waiting, the anticipation, the revelations and the subsequent tears of joy.. Or, umm, just joy.

Next year will be the 25th anniversary of Rock Am Ring and we had already been promised something pretty special.. And we weren’t to be too disappointed, really.. First up, the headliners:

Muse

Rammstein

And… I fuckin’ told you!

KISS

Looks like we’re in for one hell of a light show and fireworks three nights in a row on Center Stage.. And as if the confirmation of KISS wasn’t enough to make a classic rock geek sob with joy.. How’s about..

Motörhead

For those of us who are still angst ridden teenager’s by heart, there’s also everybody’s favorite straight edge, vegan, PETA supporters:

Rise Against

Or Welsh emo/metal core sensation

Bullet For My Valentine

.. And that’s just the beginning of things. There’s also Gogol Bordello, As I Lay Dying, Danish overnight international sensation, Volbeat, and about 70 more bands to come..

So, umm.. Tina? Others? HEY HO, LET’S GO??

I’ve been spending the weekend, and – so far – the majority of the Monday in Nyborg visiting with my dad and his wife, plus my half-sister, Mie, her boyfriend Dennis and their daughter Izabella.. And it’s been pretty good times, really.

I spent most of Saturday at Mie’s and Dennis’ place on account of them having asked me over for dinner – which is pretty much the same as saying they asked me over to cook them dinner. But hey, I loves to do me some cooking and they paid for everything, so it’s all good. The plan was that Dennis would pick me up at my dad’s and drive me back to their place, we’d have a few beers, some good food, a little wine and maybe another beer or two.. But, thankfully, a little while before that plan went into effect, that is to say right as Dennis arrived at my dad’s place, my phone rang with some unknown caller ID and so I picked it up..

The guy on the other end turned out to be the managing director of a headhunting/recruitment firm who wanted to check up on an application I sent regarding a position as marketing assistant for the Danish fast food chain, Sunset Boulevard.. Now, I’ll admit to being a little taken back by actually getting a call back on that particular application, let alone on a Saturday afternoon when I was well on my way to stumbling into a few brews.. But luckily, I was still sober and I did manage to compose myself and talk with the guy for a few minutes. Now, I’m not too familiar with these things, but if the first questions are “So, what’s your take on commuting vs re-locating? And what are your thoughts on salary?” – then you’re not doing too badly, are you?

We ended up talking a bit about what special qualifications I thought I’d be able to offer and he eventually asked if I’d agree to let him set up an interview.. Which I, of course, agreed to.. We then mutually thank each other for our time and hung up and I returned, a little shaken up and confused, to the company of my dad and Dennis who were both all but psyched to hear about this new development.. One thing led to another and Dennis and I decided that this called for a bit of celebration. So we jumped into the car, went back to his amd Mie’s place, said hi to Mie and my little 3 year old niece, Izabella, and grabbed a couple of beers in the fridge while I placed calls and text messages to various people of the “I think I just landed another job interview” variety.

When I’d finished, Izabella and I got started on dinner.. That’s right, she loves me so much that she got a little chair out to stand on so she could reach the kitchen table and help me with dinner.. And I obviously love her enough to not shoo her off, like I would have most kids, and let her help instead.. Then again, with Tina around, I guess I’m just used to little blondes wanting to take part in the cooking. Though not quite as skilled (or fast) as Tina, I would say for a three year old, Izabella did pretty good as a prep cook, but then, she is a little ahead of her game, and for some reason extremely fond of me and thus out to impress.. So things went well and smooth. In very little time we had everything ready and a roast in the oven and now had only one thing left to do.. which was to wait.

We spent the time chatting, and Dennis and I might have had another beer, until we just couldn’t wait anymore and served up the tuna mousse and shrimp starters which we thoroughly enjoyed.. Much more so than the questionable left-over bottle of white wine we’d decided to have with it.. I don’t know, but in my world wine just shouldn’t taste like apple juice, I’m sure a lot of 14 year old girls would’ve been thrilled, though.

Having eaten the starters, we had a classic example of very bad timing by thinking that the roast was now much more cooked than it really was (honestly, everybody SHOULD own a probe thermometer – it’s such a small investment!), and also by thinking that potatoes would somehow boil themselves.. Okay, someone to forgot to turn the burner on.. So for the next half hour or so, we just sorta sat around, waiting for the second course to get done.. And there was much rejoicing when it finally was.

The second course was a medium-rare roast, served with roasted potatoes, green bean and bacon salad, a questionable ready-made sauce and a Spanish red wine which was a hell of a lot better than its white counterpart.. All in all an awesome meal which was enjoyed by all – except maybe Izabella – who was getting tired and was more up for eating chocolate or causing great stir than she was for eating a nice, quiet dinner with the rest of us.. Oh well.

When we’d eaten, Dennis decided to go walk the dog and leave Mie and I to clear the table and babysit Izabella as well. Which actually proved pretty easy once I gave her a piece of wire and some pearls to play with. When Dennis returned, we gave Izabella the choice between going to bed or staying up and playing Monopoly with the grown-ups.. Which, in retrospect, was a bit of a bad idea seeing as we should’ve been able to deduct that there was no way in hell she’d go to bed willingly – just as there was no way in hell that anything good could ever come from involving an overly tired three year-old in a game of Monopoly.. Long story short, after we’d spent hours teaching her the basics such as not steeling the dice or Johan’s pieces for that matter, we finally made it through a single round only to have to spend about twenty minutes searching the living room floor for houses, hotels and what have you.. Ah, good times!

At this point, we pretty much refused to put Izabella to bed which she flat out refused unless I be the one who put her in her nighties and tucked her in. Both parents seemed pretty happy with the arrangement so from there on I really had no choice but, for the first time in my 28 years, to act like the responsible uncle that I am and do as she demanded. The whole getting her out of her clothes thing went pretty easily, as did the whole getting her into her pajamas – after I’d gotten a few helpful pointers from the three year old, that is. Actually all went well, until she looked at me and went “Oh, but I also peed in my diaper”, to which my response came promptly: “Oh, hell no.. Moooom!! Your daughter peed her diaper”.. Fast forward about five minutes, and I had the little one in bed, kissed her goodnight as demanded (later found out she had a fever and am currently reasonably happy that I’ve had about every version of the common cold and the flu that the world currently has to offer), and shut off the light.

As I did, Mie just about switched off her lights as well and decided to call it a night along with Izabella. Dennis and I, on the other hand, still had a bit left in us.. And since we decided that staying back and making noise while the girls were trying to sleep was probably a bad idea, we figured that the only reasonable thing to do was to head out for a night on the town and see what happened… Okay, maybe not exactly a reasonable thing to do, but fun none the less.

Dennis suggested we went to some establishment called “Piano Bar”, which I suspected would be a really strange, shady place, but since he was the only one with local knowledge, I tagged along.. And it turned out to be not too bad at all, really. Though in all honesty it was more of a bowling alley than a bar, but they had reasonably priced draught beer, the entrance was free and all they did demand of you was a DKK 20 fee to check your coat at the door.. Something that hugely upset the locals but which I found rather fair.. Especially if you consider they had a live band playing that evening.. So, essentially, you got entrance, coat checked, a live band and your first beer for the price that it’d usually cost you for the entrance alone at a lot of places in Kolding.. I see nothing wrong with that kind of pricing policy.

Anyways, this whole checking our coats thing had gotten us pretty thirsty, so having taken care of that business, we headed straight for the bar and ordered up a couple of beers and found a booth in which to sit while we drank our beers and waited for the live band to hit the stage, not really knowing what to expect since no one around, even the staff, seemed to know who was playing, I did spot a few vintage Fender guitars and a full Marshall amp stack on stage, so I figured that something in the rock n roll department would be a safe guess.

And what do you know? As it turns out, I was right. Well into our second beer, some three person band rather quietly hit stage, introduced themselves as “Under Cover” (heh!) and launched into what I’d have to admit was a pretty awesome cover of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B Goode”, I remember turning to Dennis and going “Hey, this might work” as Chuck Berry gave way to Van Morrison and “Brown Eyed Girl”. After another beer and a few songs from the likes of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Lynyrd Skynyrd as well as a few classic Danish acts such as Peter Belli and Gasolin, we were all rather convinced that showing up and paying the DKK 20 to check our coats had been a good fucking idea and a good deal to boot. And yes, the Danes are probably laughing now on account of the whole Peter Belli thing, but let’s not forget that there was a time when Peter Belli had long hair and played good old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll.. Which is exactly what this band did, they played good old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll with, with spirit and attitude. And I don’t think I need mention that after we’d been treated to not one, or two, but three AC/DC covers (including “You Shook Me All Night Long”), Sweet Home Alabama AND Smoke On The Water, I was completely sold.. And reasonably intoxicated after four rounds of beer and three rounds of shots..

Three rounds of shots that we both agreed not to tell Mie about once we left the establishment after the last encore and found our way into a cab and back to our respective homes for the evening. A plan which worked very well until the very next morning when I rose from my bed, cursed my drinking habits and rolled into the shower, down for breakfast and then out on the streets to take a walk and clear my head.. And just happened to run into Mie, Dennis and Izabella.. I quickly noticed that Dennis looked a little worse for wear than usual, and I also quickly noted Mie raising an accusing finger at me going “I told you to steer him clear of shots!”.. I mean, c’mon, way to stab a brother in the back!

Luckily, though, she didn’t seem too pissed and Dennis didn’t seem too wrecked from the night’s adventures. Apparently, I was the one who looked worse for wear, but then again, I was also the one who had barely slept for two days, so I guess that only made sense. And I wasn’t feeling so bad that a one hour walk couldn’t set things straight.. And I’m happy to report that that was all I ever did on that lazy Sunday.. Go for a walk. The rest of the day was spent on the couch reading, and the night was spent in my dad’s new upstairs study in a comfy recliner, sipping Belgian beer, snacking on sandwiches and watching a few episodes of True Blood, one of those vampire shows that’s apparently all the rave these days. Good Sunday!

Now, I’ve seen some pretty big bands play in some pretty intimate settings. I’ve seen Iron Maiden play a nowhere near sold out concert at at parking lot in Horsens, Denmark, I’ve seen Volbeat play for 700 people a few times, and I’ve seen some pretty large scale Danish bands play in front of 40 odd people back in the Student House days. I also knew that the night’s concert with Five Finger Death Punch (5FDP) would be a bit of an intimate ordeal..

Yet, I somehow wasn’t really prepared for the sight that met us when we eventually found our way to the venue of the night’s show. The venue was a small, intimate place called Voxhall which fits about 500 people on a good day. Ridiculously small considering that 5FDP had just recently toured summer festival circuit in Europe, playing the main stages in front of crowds of upwards of 50,000 people. Well, at least I thought it would be ridiculously small coz when Tina and I arrived about fifteen minutes before doors would open and expected to find a huge line, we found a huge line of.. Well, a total of three teenagers.. Plus a group of three people around our age who arrived at exactly the same time than we did.

The sight was both a little comic and a little tragic and disheartening at the same time. Especially if you consider the fact that the first person in line had been there since 9 AM. What a great time he must’ve had. But hey, the weather was bad, so we figured people just didn’t want to stand in line and would eventually show up later. And at least we now had something to joke about while whiling away time waiting in line. Doors eventually opened at 8 PM and the massive line, now counting some 25 people or so poured in, nearly knocking over the security personnel which were completely unprepared for the situation.. Well, no, we just sorta trotted in slowly in a single file, showed our tickets, got our hand stamps, checked our coats, and (in the case of Tina and I) naturally headed straight for the bar where I ordered us a pint of beer each. You grow thirsty and weary from waiting after all.

Though small, the venue was actually really cool, consisting of a main bar, a large open room with a stage on one end, a small cafe like area where fans, warmup band members, roadies, groupies and what have you buzzed around, talked and drank beer, and an upstairs balcony kinda thing with another smaller bar and a great areal view of the main room and stage. A view that Tina and I would soon come to enjoy, along with a few chilled jäger shots.

See, the thing about the warmup bands booked for the evening is that they were both death metal acts and the thing about death metal is.. That.. Well, to most people it’s just not a very interesting genre.. Which is to say that death metal, like most metal, has pretty groovy rhythm and interesting details, in the case of death metal, it’s just a matter of spotting it amidst all the noise, murkiness and growling.. So rather than pushing up front and banging our heads with the rest of the crowd, Tina and I sorta just hung back near the bar where we felt we belonged. As one warmup band gave way to another, and the genre changed from melodic death metal to death/groove metal (in this case mainly noticeable by the lack of keyboards and clean vocals in the second act), Tina and I decided to check out the upstairs balcony area which turned out to be a pretty swell idea because apparently the prices in the bar upstairs were far better than the ones in the bar downstairs.. And they chilled their spirits upstairs, so we could get jäger shots cheaper AND colder than on the floor, simply by traversing a few stairs.. An offer we abused to the fullest.. After all, nothing goes better together than metal and hard liquor, right?

After struggling through two warm up bands and a shot of jäger or three.. or four.. It was time for the main event of the evening, a double feature of two new school American metal bands, Shadows Fall and Five FInger Death Punch. Shadows Fall were up first, and granted, we were mostly there for 5FDP, but people were starting to move towards the stage now and who were we to miss being in front row for a performance for a Grammy Award nominated metal band? Or the subsequent performance by 5FDP for that matter.. So as the stage crew scrambled to set up for Shadows Fall, we scrambled downstairs and pushed our way into the front row.

We ended up finding a spot in the front row at stage left, right in front of the lead guitarist’s spot which seemed as good a spot as any – at least in theory, and so we settled in and chatted for a while, waiting for the show to start – which it did pretty quickly with Steel Panther’s beautiful “(Fuck All Night And) Party All Day” blaring over the PA (much to my amusement), followed by Shadow Fall’s own instrumental “The Path To Imminent Ruin” as the band hit stage to a surprisingly loud reaction from the crowd of 50 or so people.. And then things got a little crazy and confusing.. Shadows Fall tore into their set with great enthusiasm, spirit and energy, the crowd went crazy and started jumping and moshing.. And Tina and I found ourselves in the middle not really understanding half of what was going on because the lead guitarist had his monitors (the speakers that reflect his own sound towards him) turned up so loud that pretty much all we were able to pick up was the guitar and drums which kinda drowned out the vocals.. Which was a fucking shame coz I’m pretty damn certain that the boys delivered one hell of a show.

At any rate, they gave it their all and rocked their hearts out in front of a ridiculously small crowd for a band of their stature, which I found both pleasing and impressive. I just wish I could’ve heard more of it. The only songs that I did manage to recognize were “Still I rise” and “A Public Execution” both of which included a fair bit of crowd participation, the former in the shape of Brian Fair, the lead singer, letting the crowd sing parts of the chorus and the latter with the entire house, all 50-100 people strong, screaming along on the “FUCK IT ALL” parts.. Good times, hot times.. Had the vocals gotten an extra boost and the guitars been lower, it would’ve probably been a fucking awesome show!

After about a 45 minute show which included a surprising amount of songs, a fair bit of crowd interaction and even some eye candy for Tina as Brian apparently got so hot that he decided to throw off his t-shirt, wring the sweat out of it and dispose of it, the boys said thank you to the crowd, throw a few goodies, including a guitar pick to yours truly, and left the stage. Leaving us behind quite hot, dehydrated and shaken up.. Which, I suppose, is why we felt like we needed more jäger shots to cool us down. After much debating, arguing and eventually a round of rock, paper and scissors, it was decided that I’d keep our spot in the front row while Tina pranced upstairs and got us a few shots.. Ah sweet victory!

So while more roadies scrambled around more on stage, Tina took off upstairs and I grabbed a chance as the crowd thinned out a little and moved a few meters to the left in front of the stage to center stage where i had a reasonable idea that Ivan Moody, front man of 5FDP, would be during the show. In this new spot I ended up standing next to a couple of really intoxicated young men who kept trying to strike up random conversation. I talked with them a little until I saw Tina on her way back and turned around to greet her. Needless to say, my very beautiful and quite out of place companion did not go unnoticed by new new front row “friends”, neither did the fact that she smilingly and dutifully walked up to me, handed me a shot, toasted with me and waited for me to finish mine, then grabbed both empty glasses and headed back to the bar, leaving the male portion of the front row staring at me in a combination of shock, awe and jealousy. I of course merely smiled, shrugged and made some clever comment along the lines of “I’m bringing her to every show I go to from now on.”

Having played her role of drink getter, Tina soon returned and found her spot in front of me in the front row.. See, the good thing about having a tiny best friend is that you can both fit into the front row at a show on account of me being able to look well over her head while at the same time being able to keep most of the moshers at bay.. Now, all we had to do was wait which we did, along with a couple of our newfound drunk friends who were pretty good at sharing anecdotes and beer, so the wait actually went pretty smoothly even of anticipation was starting to grow.. A lot!

Eventually the lights dimmed, the crowd buzzed and the guests of honor of the evening took the stage.. To the sound of a roar so loud I had trouble understanding that it was coming from such a small crowd.. Evidently what the crowed lacked in size, it made up for in dedication. 5FDP opened with a super heavy version of “Burn It Down” which had the crowd screaming, singing, moshing and jumping along.. And once again had me questioning the size of the crowd, because, honestly, I’ve felt less pressure in the back at major stages on the European festival circuit.

Up next was “Salvation”, a song with a chorus which goes something along the lines of “Monkey see, monkey do, you’re always doing what they tell you to”. Ivan illustrated this beautifully by jumping around and acting like a monkey on stage which was not only hilarious to look at, but went to show that he was thoroughly enjoying himself. As was the rest of the band. And I dare say it was a pleasure to watch because quite honestly you’d expect them to be a little bummed out with the turnout. But rather than being pissed, they were visually pleased that such a small crowd could created such an intense feeling, show such dedication and be such a “fucking loud bunch” as Ivan put it after having hushed down one of several “FIVE FINGER – DEATH PUNCH!!” chants I started that evening.

The rest of the show was a tour de force of the two albums worth of material that the band has. “The Way Of The Fist”, “Bulletproof”, the new single “Hard To See” and of course “White Knuckles” which ended in a shout-off with Ivan hollering “I’m taking back control..” and the crowd dutifully replying “WITH MY KNUCKLES!” – through it all the band got more and more energetic, the crowd got more and more crazy and we went from a situation where I could pretty easily throw both hands in the air and spend my time taking pictures and rocking out to one where I actually had to get a pretty firm grip on the rail around Tina to not only protect her a bit better but also keep my own footing as various elbows, arms, heads and people started crashing in to me.. This tactic worked pretty well until the very end of the concert where people had gotten so worked up that I pretty much had to just place both arms on either side of her little head to at least ward off the stray arms and elbows from hitting her all while wondering what the hell had gotten into this crowd.. Good show, though!

The show ended in a bit of a shouting contest at Ivan asked the crowd whether they wanted to hear an old song or a new song, after a lot of senseless screaming and debating back and forth, they eventually “decided” to do both and kicked into “Dying Breed”, probably their most brutal song to date, which in an anticipated, but welcome move was followed by “The Bleeding” – Their largest single hit and a kick-ass hardcore ballad to boot.. Which, I’m reasonably sure, is the moment that most of us had been waiting for.. So at that very moment I did something very uncommon for me and let Tina fend for herself (’twas but a slow song after all) while I grabbed my camera and shot this video to capture the mood and setting.. I’m reasonably sure she forgives me for getting bumped a little:

.. And with that it was pretty much over. After 45 intense minutes, the band said thanks, took a bow, threw a few collectibles (including a pick that Tina caught) and left the stage.. And so there we stood, banged up, slightly bruised and sweaty, weary from the experience.. And, once again, very thirsty.. Which is why our first move after the show had ended was to rush off to the upstairs bar and have me buy us a round if jäger shots.. Only then could we even start worrying about how the hell to get home..

Friday November 13, 2009 was a day I’d been looking forward to for months and months in advance. It would be the day where I (along with my partner in crime, Tina, naturally) would finally get to experience one of my favorite, if not my favorite, up and coming metal bands – Five Finger Death Punch – live on stage in a rather intimate setting in nearby Aarhus, Denmark.

Now, there are a lot of different ways of preparing for a much anticipated concert experience. Coming down with a case of the H1N1 (aka Swine Flu) is NOT one of them. Which is why I, as I think you can imagine, got more than a little worried and pissed on the evening of Tuesday 10 November when I was sitting at work and suddenly started feeling heavy headed, queasy, sore throated and dizzy. Long uneventful story short, I went home, crashed on the couch which right now doubles on my bed and stayed there for a solid 60 hours straight, during which the flu hit full force and started a battle of wits and determination with my bodily defense systems.

I wouldn’t say that the whole H1N1 experience was that tough on me physically, I was mainly just tired, heavy headed and completely drained of energy. What was probably worst was the whole mental aspect of not knowing whether I’d be up and about on Friday or whether I’d have to call Tina and tell her that I’d have to cancel the date we’d so been looking forward to. Luckily, as it turns out I needn’t have worried as my determination to rock helped my immune system beat the last remaining germs and so, on Friday morning, I finally emerged from bed, nice healthy, well rested (after having slept most of two and a half days away), and ready to rock!

This fact seemed to really please the Tina as she herself hadn’t really know whether to get excited about the show or whether to fear that the entire ordeal would be canceled. Now that we knew it was on, we spent the morning (which is to say the early afternoon as morning to me is now generally somewhere in the 11 AM – 12 Noon area) making the final plans and arrangements for the day. Our plan ended up being reasonably simple. We’d meet up at Tina’s at around 3 PM, hang out a bit while she more than likely got the last few things done, walk down to the train station, catch the 4:20 PM train towards Aarhus and spend the one and a half hour train ride drinking a few beers. Then find something to eat, hang out a bit, go to the venue, get in and rock out.. Pretty simple, really..

And, of course, it turned out reasonably more complicated than that. For starters, I kicked things off being late to get out the door, when I finally did make it out and a few minutes down the road, I had to turn back as I realized that I’d gone off WITH my glasses on but WITHOUT my ear plugs in my pocket. Which, in the case of a hardcore metal show, is not the way you want to go, doubling back, returning on my way and sprinting a bit now, I made it down to Tina’s only fashionably late.. Only to realize that she, naturally, wasn’t ready either.. See, Tina was in the process of giving herself a decidedly more “metal”-like look for the occasion.. Ahem, yes, granted, a metal-like look isn’t really something you’d expect from a pretty, little, blue-eyed, innocent looking platinum blonde girl.. But as with so many other things in life, Tina went at it full force with loads of determination.. And a rather alternative approach.. Which, as with so many other things she does, you wouldn’t really expect to work.. Yet somehow it does.

So, when I found Tina, she was in the bathroom, applying her 20th layer or so of mascara to finish a prominently dark and smokey eye-makeup scheme which she claimed to be very metal and fitting for the occasion. I’m not quite sure I quite followed her, but I deducted that she looked great as always only with considerably darker (and albeit slightly scarier and more overwhelming) eye-makeup, so I didn’t argue. Having finished that, my wonderful and slightly deranged sidekick then launched into what must probably be the first ever heavy metal related clothing crisis in recorded history.. Yes, dear reader, I didn’t think that would be possible either. But apparently there was a lot of confusion as to whether the outfit of the evening should be all black, as pink a possible or a combination of both.. And what, pray tell, f’ing shoes should the poor girl wear?

I mean.. Honestly, babe, you know I love you.. But sometimes, just sometimes, I think you may be part of the reason why I’m losing my hair

After many considerations, a fair bit of teasing on my behalf and a lot of chasing about the house, trying various things on Tina’s behalf, we finally settled on a suitable outfit of black and pink. After I convinced Tina that heels probably weren’t the most suitable choice in a mosh-pit, we even decided on a plair of flat, pink (of course) Converse shoes.. And were about ready to head out the door.. Which was good considering we were now running so late that we pretty much had to head out the door in order to catch our train and such things.

Walking to the train, we chatted merrily, an activity we kept up through the ticket purchase process and subsequent wait for the train to arrive. We even kept up our conversation on the train, only this time with the added benefit of a couple of cold beers to keep us company.

The first leg of our journey ended in Fredericia, a near-by small town and major train hub where we changed trains and boarded an Intercity Express train for Aarhus. A very packed Intercity Express Train to boot. As such, we spent the first part of the journey standing up which left me more than a little queasy as I was standing right in the connecting joint between two train carts, so I was pretty happy when eventually Tina spotted a place for us to sit down for the remainder of the journey. The remainder of the train journey went without any major discomfort if you disregard the fact that I had to pee for most of the way.

We eventually arrived in Aarhus with a few hours to kill and since it was a pretty rainy, cold Friday evening, most of this time was killed in a major shopping mall located conveniently adjacent to the main train station. Here we spent a lot of time gazing at things that Tina really wanted but that she, thank God, couldn’t purchase as we were going to a rock show and had no way of bringing our things. As curtain call time grew closer, we eventually made our way from the comfort of the brightly lit, air conditioned shopping mall into the cold, rainy Aarhus night and, by way of a local Burger King, made our way towards the venue for the show..

And this is where things really started getting interesting..

Something utterly weird happened last week. I received a large stash of cash from Tina, and a pretty significant bank transfer from my ex-girlfriend Louise.. Which means that I not only gained DKK 1600 in an afternoon but was also in a strange, unfamiliar situation in which, for the first time in years, no one owed me any money what-so-ever.. Well, none that I know of anyways.

You may think this is a good thing, and indeed it was. But to me, it was also a very unfamiliar situation because we have, literally for the past couple of years, been in a situation where Tina constantly owed me at least some amount of money and where I’d be able to cash in on her debt with me whenever we were going somewhere or doing something.. And then, all of a sudden, this nice, familiar comfortable situation came to an end with her paying off her debt and changing everything.. Clearly something had to be done, because the prospect of her not being financially dependent on my just wasn’t very appealing.

So I did what any reasonable person in my situation would do and lend her some more money! A much smaller amount this time, granted, but it served the purpose of not only bringing things back to normal, but also allowing for us to have more than one concert to look forward to in this year. Long story short, I bought two tickets for us to go see the Five Finger Death Punch + Shadows Fall show @ Voxhall in Aarhus on November 13. Which is cool for a myriad of reasons, the first being that Five Finger Death Punch is one of my absolute favorite bands right now, another being that it’s been a while since we saw any live acts, and yet another is.. Well.. Just the plain awesomeness of it all!

I mean, look.. Most guys my age have female best friends whose idea of quality time together on a Friday night is probably something along the lines of sipping tea together while watching Dancing With The Stars or America’s Next Top Model. Me, I’m blessed with Tina who’d take a beer with a Jägermesiter chaser over a cuppa tea any day and would all but love to spend a Friday night leading the charge with me in the front row at a thrash/metalcore show.. Hah! How awesome is that? I mean.. really!

But I digress, I guess, but you’ll have to forgive me on account of me being just a wee thrilled about the fact that I’m seeing one of my favorite bands live in a month in a small and intimate setting with good company. I really could think of worse ways to spend a Friday evening..

In closing, things are better now than they were just a few days ago. I have more concerts to look forward to, Tina once again owes me money, and rumor has it that Denmark beat Sweden in footie this past Saturday and is now heading to the World Cup in South Africa next summer

This is officially a first for me.. For the first time ever, I’ll be praising Chris Cornell, a love song AND a cover in one sentence. We all probably know that I’m not usually one to get excited about cover songs. We also know that I consider Chris Cornell ever so slightly overrated. And, we most certainly know, that I’m not usually the guy to get all soft and mushy over a love song. Never the less, I have to share this song.

So, I give you: Chris Cornell doing a breathtaking cover version of what I sincerely believe to be the most beautiful and sincere love song ever written: Led Zeppelin’s Thank You.

Impressive, really..
