I wish to thank you for once again ruining a perfectly good dinner with your intriguing TV adds!
Warning: Controversial, angry rant ahead – do not read if easily offended!
It’s not that I’m particularly squeamish or anything, nor am I careless or heartless for that matter. But why, for the love of God, must I for the 2nd consecutive month sit through prime time TV adds featuring sick or abused animals or starving kids? Have you no shame?
For those who do not know what I’m talking about, various organizations have been running TV adds here for the past couple of months featuring what I like to refer to as “hopeless cases”: Worn down victims of starvation and the AIDS epidemic in Africa courtesy of UNICEF and various variations of of sick and abused animals ranging from caged bears falling victim to China’s traditional medicine craze and sick, infected dogs living on the streets of Eastern Europe courtesy of the WSPA.
What gives? I’m by no means a heartless person.. But I’m sorry, street dogs emaciated to a point where they can barely scratch their own oozing wounds do not need charitable donations, nor do caged up bears driven into the abyss of insanity (to a point where they actually start biting at themselves) from having the bile drawn from them on a daily basis.. No, these poor critters need to be put out of their misery and put to sleep! You can’t put a stop to exploitation of animals for traditional Chinese medicine as much as you’d love to, the money involved are far greater than whatever you can come up with. Nor can you treat the problem of disease carrying stray dogs..
What you can do, though, is to stop your own exploitation of these poor critters and rather than subject us to such horrible imagery, you could actually show us what you were planning to do, constructively, with the DKK 100 donations you’re asking for. By subjecting us to these images, you’re no better than the people exploiting or abandoning these animals in the first place. By exploiting images of suffering animals for personal gain, you’re no better than the people you claim that you’re trying to stop.. For shame! I think we’re past the point where guilt tripping and grossing out works, campaigns like that serve only to enrage.. If not against the perpetrators, then surely against yourself.. Why not show us what our donations would be good for, rather than what they won’t be good for?
As for the UNICEF children? I’m sorry, but that poor kid from the add is probably already dead. Dead as a poster boy for an evening tea shocker add. First of all, I’m very sorry that people in Africa are starving.. But with what I’m making at the moment, if the choice is between me eating well and healthy for a month or a kid in Africa eating for whatever period of time, I’m gonna go with keeping myself well-fed and happy, and not feel bad about it for one minute.
Secondly, and more controversially.. Yes, people in Africa are indeed starving, so are people in every parts of the world? Why? Because the damn, dying world is becoming ever increasingly populated. There’s a limit as to how many people certain parts of this world can sustain.. What is feeding them gonna help if it just means securing them a longer minimalistic existence under terrible conditions? Who’s to say that famine is not nature’s way of regulating certain things. Yes, that’s a terrible thing to say, but can you really deny that the world’s population is growing at an alarming rate and that at one point or another we’ll have reached the limit?
And yes, the AIDS epidemic is out of control down there.. But whose fault is that? The poor Africans? Or the wealthy white men who sent their preachers to tell the poor buggers that birth control and safe sex were wrong, sinful acts and against the will of God? The key word here is information and education! Spread the word and educate people on the consequences of unsafe sex and the dangers of AIDS.. It remains to see, though, who should be schooled more – the poor troubled people in Africa or the Catholic zealots preaching their rubbish!
There, that’s that off my chest.. As you can see, the guilt tripping didn’t really work.. In other ways than serving to enrage me – probably not towards the right people!
