Everybody probably knows that on December 8, 1980, the world lost a great music when John Lennon was gunned down. What fewer people probably know is that on the same date 24 years later, in 2004, the metal world lost an equally important icon..
On this day, ex-Pantera and Damageplan guitarist, “Dimebag” Darrel Abbott was shot, and killed, during a show in Columbus, Ohio by a deranged, so-called fan. Dimebag was the kinda person whose music, spirit and very being touched and moved a lot of people. Something as rare as a genuinely good person in an, at times, pretty dirty business.. And as such his death created a pretty unparalleled stir of emotion within the metal community.
A couple of days ago, I found this video of Zakk Wylde, Ozzy Osbourne guitarist and Black Label Society front man, paying tribute to his late, great friend by performing a live piano version of his song “In This River” .. And, well, if you thought the original version was heartbreaking, this is probably gonna beat you over the head pretty badly. It really goes to show that while metal stars may look all tough and emotionally detached, deep down, they’re people with feelings just like everybody else.
I realize that the concept of sobbing rock stars might seem tragically comic to some, to me it just goes to show that we metalheads aren’t as emotionally detached as people would like to think.
